Adding users to Sharepoint

We have a strange issue I am wondering if anyone has come across. When adding a user to a SharePoint it appears to add the user however the user information does not show up in the permission list. Taking it a step further I check the permissions and the user has the appropriate permissions .  Any insight into this would be appreciated.
