Reporting services data connections/subscriptions lost after Sharepoint content database restore

We recently needed to do a restore of our Sharepoint 2010 portal's content database which was implemented successfully except for the following. We run SSRS 2008 R2 in sharepoint integrated mode from a different server. Prior to the restore we were able to upload reports and schedule subscriptions of these reports on the portal. After the restore we were seeing "Object reference not set to an instance of an object…" error messages anytime a report or data connection was selected. This error eventually resolved itself on its own, however all the report data connections were lost and needed to be rebuilt as well as all subscriptions. Reports are now working fine after we recreated the connections and subscriptions. My question though is about whether report data connections and subscriptions will be lost and need to be recreated anytime a restore of the content database is done. Right now we only have a few reports that we work with, however over time the number of reports and subscriptions we have will be much greater. Is there something we could have done and do in the future to prevent this loss?
