ADFS on Windows Server 2012 and Sharepoint 2010 (federation)

We have Sharepoint 2010 installed on Windows Server 2008 R2.  We also have our domain controller on Windows Server 2008 R2.  Now, we're working on implementing federated authentication.  We want to configure ADFS on a separate virtual machine.  Can we use Windows Server 2012 R2 for the ADFS?  Will there be any issue with Sharepoint 2010 communicating with the latest ADFS version?  Or, do we have to install ADFS on Windows Server 2008 R2 to make the OS version consistent across all servers?  Our server admin is leaning more towards using Windows Server 2012 R2 since he says that gives us some federation options that might not existed in ADFS 2.0 (the one that exists on Windows Server 2008 R2).
