set up queue position indicator in sharepoint lists

Hi all,

i have a sharepoint list which i am looking to get set up with queue positions based on it's location from the top of the list (i.e. the item at the top of the list is queue position 1, second item is queue position 2 etc.)

currently my list runs a workflow against another list and then the item deletes itself, so ideally this queue position would be fluid (so once any list item reaches the top of the list it automatically becomes queue position 1).

does anyone know how to set this up?
