The query cannot be completed because the number of lookup columns it contains exceeds the lookup column threshold. Error appears even if View contains only a single look-up column if the Library contains more than the threshold.

Can anyone please clarify whether this limit is supposed to apply to the Library or to the View?

I have a library which exceeds the lookup limit (8) in our site. If I create a view of the library with no lookup columns then datasheet view and export to excel work fine. If I include even 1 lookup column in the view then I get the error message about the threshold being exceeded.

If I do not include >8 lookup columns in the View, then I believe they should not form part of the query and I should be able to use export/datasheet view without hitting the threshold.
