Automatically set up alert for new sharepoint list item

Hi,

I have a sharepoint list.

I have configured an alert for myself and my team to be notified of new/edited items.

I need to be able to create an alert for the domain user who "creates" any new items, so they can effectively be subscribed to future updates/changes to the item.

I'm sure I have seen this working before, without using workflows for the notifications, but cannot figure out how to do it. 

The OOTB functionality of sharepoint alert emails is exactly what I need, i.e. link to item, changes highlighted, etc. 

Please can some kindly soul help?!?!  :)
