Change URL of Web Application with Host Headers

Following a lengthy search on the web everything seems to point at Alternative Access Mapping however I came across this on Technet

"Host-named site collections cannot use alternate access mappings. Host-named site collections are automatically considered to be in the Default zone, and the URL of the request must not be modified between the end user and the server."

Background

We have recently put in a sharepoint farm and set up 2 web applications + mysite and resources application detailed below (Names Changed) all on Port 80 with Host Header set.

site1.domain.com

site2.domain.com

my.domain.com

resources.domain.com

Following a lengthy debate with my systems team they have explained to me that we cannot use this domain. So to my question how do I change domain.com to domain.plc.uk ensuring all content and configuration is maintained.

site1.domain.plc.uk

site2.domain.plc.uk

my.domain.plc.uk

resources.domain.plc.uk

I have found the following post http://ranaictiu-technicalblog.blogspot.co.uk/2010/09/sharepoint-2010-rename-site-url.html but want a second opinion if this will work and what extra will I need to do to resolve the mysites setup.

Thanks in advance for any help.
