Content query webpart - retrieve and filter by Calendar event start date

We have a standard Sharepoint 2010 calendar at the top of our site collection.  In one of the subsites, we want to display a list of events BUT we only want to show events that are NOT in the past.  We tried the content query webpart but it does not allow us to add a query for event start date.  What's the easiest way to implement this?

I found this solution but it seems strange to me that I would need to grab the Start Date and then map it to either Title or Description.  The start date is neither of those.
