Force New Document using a Content Type to Open in the App

I have completely the opposite requirement to that covered in an earlier thread about opening in the browser.

We have a content type that is based upon a Word Template that is stored in a separate document library on our site. The content type works in that it creates a new document using the template, however it opens in the Browser and is automatically called Document.

I want to be able to select the content type from the new drop down list in the document library and for the selected content type to open in Word and for users to be able to save it with a suitable name rather than it being called Document.

Is this possible?
