Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this...
I've been trying to research how to properly and safely decrease the size of our SharePoint_Config database log file. Our SharePoint_Config database log file is currently over 73GB and we are performing regular full and transaction log backups.
Searching the web, I've found several posts with instructions to shrink the log file. However, theDatabase Maintenance for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262731(v=office.14).aspx), states the following:
- Shrink operations should be executed rarely and only
after executing an operation that removes a very large quantity of data from a
database, and then only when that free space is not anticipated to be used
again. Data file shrink operations cause heavy index fragmentation and are
extremely resource-intensive. Examples of when it may be acceptable to shrink
the database data files are the relocation of a large of number of site
collections from one content database to another content database, or the
deletion of a large list, either of which can create large amounts of unused
space. - We recommend that you shrink only content databases. The configuration database, Central Administration content database, and various service application databases do not usually undergo enough deletions to contain significant free space.
I am a little bit confused on the exact process that we should take to decrease our SharePoint_Config database log file. Are there any 'offical steps' on how to do this?
Thanks,
Amy
