Remote ADFS trust

Hopefully this is a rather simple answer, and I am just over thinking it.

If there were a remote ADFS server that I wanted to create a trust with so users from the remote AD can login to SharePoint, would I need to have a local ADFS server and the trust created between my local ADFS and the remote ADFS or could I skip the local ADFS server and establish a trust from SharePoint with the remote ADFS server.
