Mixed SQL Server versions in a farm

Hi,

We have a SharePoint 2010 farm with a PowerPivot/SSRS application server. The SharePoint database server, and the PowerPivot/SSRS servers are currently both on SQL 2008 R2 SP1. We would like to understand if we can upgrade only the PowerPivot/SSRS server to SQL 2012 (leaving the SharePoint database server as is) to get the benefits of the new features in PowerPivot and in order to use Power View. The main reason for asking this question is because of the change in the SSRS architecture, in that it is a Service application with SQL 2012, so would it allow to save the Reporting Services databases on a SQL 2008 R2 instance?

Following is the farm topology:

2 WFEs, Load balanced (Central Administration, Web, Query, Index, Index Mirror)

App server 1 (Service Application, Crawl)

App server 2 (PowerPivot for SharePoint
, SSRS) - SQL 2008 R2 SP1

SQL Server for SharePoint databases - SQL 2008 R2 SP1

In case it is fine to upgrade only the PowerPivot/SSRS box, then is there anything that we need to be aware of in terms of potential issues (apart from the pre-requisites like upgrading SharePoint to the latest SP and CU)?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Manu
