Use the People Search Core Results to show a short user directory for specific users

Greetings all,

We're setting up workspace sites for small, interdepartmental and cross-regional teams, and need to be able to show a list of people in the team. Ideally, it would include their name, presence, picture and extension.

I've tried the "User List" webpart, but this only shows a list of users in a specific AD or Sharepoint group. The Contact webpart just shows a contact, and the People Search webpart won't cut it because the groups are not tracked in AD.

What other options do we have? Is there some way we can use a List web-part to automatically pull in information from profile properties? At the moment, it seems like a fully-manual list (everything put in without a link to profile properties) is the only way to go?
