Forms Based Authentication and Email Alerts

We have a forms based web application that uses AD LDS, as well as NTLM against AD. The forms based users cannot set alerts because SharePoint does not recognize an email address for them. If you look at this forms based user, this is all that is there.

Is it possible to somehow possible to pull the email address from AD LDS where SharePoint will recognize it?
