topology planning

Suppose a new client comes with a SharePoint 2010 project proposal just saying they want to implement a new intranet portal. If we want to do a topology planning for that intranet project ... what all information we should collect from the client to come out with correct planning? I mean what all factors we should consider & what all questions we should ask to client before going for planning?
