Farm Reboot - Best Practices?

I've searched all over the internet and havent found any information about best practices when rebooting a farm to accept new microsoft OS patches.  For some reason i remember someone telling me, or remember reading it somewhere that you should pause any current running crawls in search administration, reboot servers(taking NLB into account) and then run an IIS reset when they come back up, and finally resume any paused crawls.

Is this a recommended best practice?   Currently we have a farm that is setup to automatically reboot itself via task scheduler.  It has a batch file that gets run to turn off sharepoint services, reboot, and then resume the services.  I havent confirmed it but i'm assuming this would kick off a full crawl for any content sources that were in the middle of a crawl.

What are some concerns that i should have with rebooting a server this way?  Is there any documentation that anyone knows of that details the reboot process?  Is there even a reboot process or am i making this all up?
