I am a bit confused how to go about this as links I keep seeing mention different things. I am trying to stick to the Technet articles, rather than go by 3rd party blogs which I do not know if the author is correct or not.
I currently have a Sharepoint 2010 farm with ONE web front end, TWO app servers and ONE SQL 2008 back-end.
I need to add a NEW standalone server for reporting services - I cannot reuse any of the existing servers. I have built a brand new VM with 2008 R2 as the OS and am following this page here - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb677368.aspx
What I am confused about is what exactly is required. As I already have a Sharepoint 2010 farm, do I need to install Sharepoint again as per that link on the NEW server? I have performed the following so far...
1.Installed a base 2008 R2 server OS
2.Installed SQL 2008 R2 reporting services on this server (options selected were "DB engine services" as SQL admin wants reporting to NOT be on the main SQL server, "Reporting services" and "management tools")
3.I chose to install the sharepoint integrated mode default configuration
4.Following installation I have set up the report manager URL within SQL reporting services
This is the part where I am confused as to where to go next. The MSDN link says to install Sharepoint on the server and to install the sharepoint integration tools. Other sites I have seen just skip to setting up SQL reporting services in Central Admin.... Maybe these sites have installed SQL reporting on an EXISTING web front end server hence why??!
So, do I need to follow ALL steps in the MSDN article - ie do I need to install Sharepoint 2010 on the reporting server and make it a web front end? THEN configure it under Sharepoint Central admin?
I can dump the box and start again if needs be, so if anyone has a better idea let me know! Thanks.
