Hi,
We’ve recently noticed a confusing result when users with read-only access open a file from SharePoint 2010. In the server bar(of Office 2010) they see a message saying “Check out required” and are presented a button to check the document out. If they click on the button, they are asked for login details which will never work as they only have read-only access to the document.
Is there is any way of preventing the server bar showing the check-out button if a user only has read-only access to a document?
The problem is summarised in this old web post:
http://amatterofdegree.typepad.com/a_matter_of_degree/2008/05/read-only-docum.html
The author suggests the problem is solved in SharePoint 2010 / Office 2010, but we’re seeing differently as are some of the people who have responded to the post above. This suggests there may be a server-level configuration option or something similar?
I've found loads of people raising the issue online, but no solutions.
Hope someone here can help. Thanks, Oz
