Mixing SharePoint versions on same db server

We have an existing SP2010 farm using a SQL2008 db server. We have a new SP2013 farm being implemented soon and I would like to know if it's acceptable to use the same db server for two different SP environments. Are there any performance or security gotchas that might occur when mixing versions on the same SQL server? What's the best practice?
