Sharepoint file name restrictions

Hi

Is there any way in Sharepoint 2010 to get it to allow filenames beginning with "." and/or containing the "_" and "&" character within a document library? 

Any solution welcome except renaming all documents containing such characters as this is not really an option as this is an enterprise wide issue for 3,000 users. I do find it frustrating in 2013 that we seem to be still limited by MS DOS file naming convention.
