Question about user profile service and active directory groups

Our user profile service application seems to be functioning normally, but there is one quesiton I'd like to ask about it. If we assign an email address to an Active Directory and the group is already listed in the Site Collections list of "People and Groups", it doesn't pull in that change. I performed a few other tests and it doesn't pull in any change to the email address attribute (even given several weeks to do so). Is this a setting that I can configure within SharePoint to refresh changes like that from Active Directory?
