I'm hoping to find a solution to why the thumbnail images of our spreadsheets are lost whenever we upload or update a workbook to a gallery. SharePoint’s “GetSnapshot.exe” process is firing (I can see it running in Task Manager) but it's not retaining the thumbnail image. Instead, a red X appears on a generic thumbnail image when the gallery is opened. I've spent a lot of time going thru dozens of postings on MSDN and elsewhere about this issue, and where a few people have gotten results, we've tried the same things and haven't.
We first created our production farm by copying the content database from a lab machine that was correctly generating thumbnails. The lab is a single server SharePoint 2010 environment. The resulting site in production worked fine after initial setup, but then we needed to make updates to the production galleries , so we uploaded workbooks directly to those galleris. The result? Red Xs appear on all the thumbnails of workbooks we upload or update.
Using the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2361559 document, we are still having the issue. Here is what we checked:
1. Excel services is rendering workbooks.
2. Internet Explorer 9 is not installed. I am on IE8.
3. We already installed Sql 2008 R2 SP1 for PowerPivot for SharePoint.
4. I was able to test to see that getsnapshot.exe is being spawned (by checking task manager):
5. We tried running GetSnapshot.exe manually.
6. The workbook contains embedded PowerPivot data, and is generating thumbnails correctly in our single server lab environment. (Note that in production is that this is a web frint end and SQL back end.)
7. The workbook does not contain more than one data source.
8. The file is an .xlsx file.
9. Alternate Access Mappings are setup correctly.
10. We added the PowerPivot site to the trusted intranet sites for the account running Getsnapshot.exe
11. We disabled loopback check.
12. We do not have the check box checked off for "refresh on open" in the workbook connection properties
13. We set Advanced Settings for the Document library(PowerPivot Gallery), opening documents in the browser setting to "Default-Open in Browser".
Beyond the KB already mentioned, I also
- tried creating the gallery as a doc library template on the lab, and importing it to production, but when I do it regenerates the snapshot and errors out.
- verified that the GetSnapshot.exe file on C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80\bin is 50 KB.
- am looking at permissions. I added the admin account to the SQLServerMSASUser$computer name$PowerPivot Instance account. Does anyone know of any grop policy changes changes that are required?
Has anyone come up with a solution I haven't tried already?
