From which field is the Account name populated?

In Central Admin, when I view the Manage User Properties, the Account name Mapped Attribute is <Specific to connection>.

I can't find out how to see where it is looking for this field. Some of our users end up having different domain names from others.

In AD they all seem the same.

How can I find out where it is looking for this data?
