We have a Sharepoint 2010 intranet farm and are currently getting ready to upgrade the Sharepoint 2007 extranet farm to 2010. Can these two farms share the same database server (same SQL Server 2008 instance)? SQL Server is running on a virtual machine with 24GB of RAM. From my research it looks like theoretically they can but in practice do I need to consider other factors such as processing power and other burdens on the db server? The web server for intranet is on the company's internal network. The web server for the extranet will be in the DMZ.
Content database sizes:
- intranet: 60GB
- extranet: 30GB
Total estimated number of users (total for both): around 500 users.
