Delete documents in a library based on date

I have a document library with over 80,000 items.  We are in the process of doing a site clean up and it was decided to delete only documents that's older than 2010 and beyond.  Since the threshold is set at 5000 items, we're are unable to go through SharePoint Designer and the library is too large to open it using a view.  What's the best way to do about doing this programmatically?  I've came across many blogs and sites but not sure if these would apply to my situation.
