SharePoint Upgrade

Hi,
We were trying to update our SP2010 environment to service pack 2 and latest cumulative updates, these patches were tested in QA environment and worked fine there but when we did in our acutal farm we were unable to run the psconfig because of missing webparts, features and finally this error "Cannot use table option LARGE VALUE TYPES OUT OF ROW on a user table that does not have any of large value types varchar(max), nvarchar(max), varbinary(max), xml or large CLR type columns in it. This option can be applied to tables having large values computed column that are persisted." We had to ultimately roll back the updates.

Would there be any commands or prepratory checks which we could run before the upgrade to avoid such a situation
