Changing the Farm service account and database server after installation

I have a question about how to properly change the farm account and the database server where the farm is located, after installation. Here is my scenario:

We are in the process of building a number of development workstations, each of which will be running either Server 2012 with SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 or Server 2008R2 with SQL Server 2008R2 and SharePoint 2010. Both environments will be running Visual Studio 2013 for development. These will be virtual machines hosted on an ESXi server.

We will build two images, then clone these out to the remaining systems and join them to the domain.

How hard is it to change the database server name and SharePoint farm account used for these installs after we clone them?

My initial attempt to create an alias with SharePoint failed because from what I read the server had to be on a domain in order to properly do this and the initial installation uses a local account for the Farm account.

Any suggestions on how to change these after installation? Or should I re-consider the method used to build these and maybe start over so that these can cloned properly afterward?
