For a Shared SP 2010 farm, if the farm is shared with a number of country units, what would be a good design - Have a single web application and then use managed paths/host named site collections, or have one or more web applications for each country units.
I have come across "no more than 20" web applications recommendation, and understand that the final number is largely dependant on the hardware as well.
Are there any benefits apart from vanity urls in segregating information across separate web applications in an organization. I believe there are some benefits to be had from the way SQL queries are optimised if the content db holds similar type of data. Would this be a big enough factor.
