Sharepoint Database full (Not log file)

I have a sharepoint 2010 content database that has reached the 10gb limit (We use SQL Express 2012). I have deleted items out of it and from the recycle bin but the database does not change in size. The log file is only 1mb in size but the database (mdf) is still reporting as 10gb. Is there a way I can get the space back and if so how? I have tried running the Shrinkdatabase command and shrinkfile command found here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262731%28v=office.14%29.aspx#DBMaintenanceForSPS2010_ShrinkingDataFiles but neither work. The Shrinkdatabase command reports there is not enough free space to reclaim. There is currently 50gb of space free on the server where the database is sitting as well.

Any help would be great.
