Handling SQL data, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PDF's, etc ...

Hello Community

    Currently data exists on a network mostly in SQL Server Databases. There is also other data
on the network like Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PDF’s.

    In the future a Sharepoint 2013 server farm will be built.

    How do you add that existing data on the network to a Sharepoint 2013 farm that is going to be built in the future?

    Thank you

Reading User Profile Properties pragmatically in SharePoint 2010 Returns Null Values Although it has values returned from AD

  1. I configured the user profile service application and run Sync and user profiles and its properties returned from Active directory but when I want to read it pragmatically it returns null values.

this is my code...

   void runQueryButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
           // Get the My Sites site collection, ensuring proper disposal
            using (SPSite mySitesCollection = new SPSite("http://sp/my"))
            {
                //Get the user profile manager
                SPServiceContext context = SPServiceContext.GetContext(mySitesCollection);
                UserProfileManager profileManager = new UserProfileManager(context);
                UserProfile profile = profileManager.GetUserProfile("Contoso\\user");

                foreach (Property prop in profileManager.Properties)
                {
                   // if (prop.Name == "Department")
                    resultsLabel.Text += prop.DisplayName + ":" + profile[prop.Name].Value + "<br />"; ;
                }
            }

}

SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot System Service not visible in Central Administration

Hi all,

I want to test PowerPivot 2012 on the following configuration:
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Sharepoint 2010 - Enterprise edition
- SQL Server 2008 R2
- PowerPivot for Sharepoint<o:p></o:p>

As such, I downloaded SQL Server 2012 Evaluation and tried to upgrade SQL Server 2008 PowerPivot for Sharepoint instance to SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for Sharepoint. It didn't work as it's not possible to upgrade from Enterprise to Evaluation edition without a pid.

Next, I uninstalled the existing SQL Server 2008 PowerPivot for Sharepoint and I installed the SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for Sharepoint.

I started to configure PowerPivot in Central administration (
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210609.aspx) , but I got stuck at the 2nd step Create and Configure a PowerPivot Service Application (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210685.aspx) in Central Administration.

The problem is that both SQL Integration Service  and SQL Server PowerPivot System service are not visible in Central administration > Manage services on server; however they are visible and running in Windows Administrative Tools > Services.

Do you think the services are missing in Sharepoint Central Administration because the Sharepoint configuration database is on SQL Server 2008, while the Powerpivot instance is on SQL Server 2012 ?

SharePoint 2010 Foundations Time to Install / Setup - Need Estimate for Project Supervisor

$

QUESTION TO BE ANSWERED:  Estimation of how long it will take to setup SharePoint 2010 Foundations from start to finish? - Step by Step and time each step would take.

BACKGROUND:  My manager needs a detailed list of the steps necessary to install SharePoint 2010 Foundation on my Server and Clients as well as the amount of time those steps will take.  I know in order to setup my Server that Active Directories need to be running.  I have a person on staff that will accomplish that task for me.  He estimated that it should take no more than 2 hours (Probably a lot less he said).  First of all, is there any other preparation the Server needs besides Active Directories being setup?  Second, what is a list of all the other steps to install?  I have already downloaded the appropriate SharePoint 2010 Foundations to a CD that is ready to put in the Server to install.  What will be involved after that?  What needs to be done to the clients to make that happen?  Is there a YouTube video that is particularly good?

WHY AM I INSTALLING SHAREPOINT 2010 FOUNDATION?:  Basically, for one reason and one reason only: Document Collaboration for a team of 3 or 4 people.  That's it.

WHO AM I? A Database Programmer / Developer.  I do have a guy who understands Server Stuff that will be available to help, if necessary, but is very busy.  He has agreed to help me by setting up the Active Directories, but that I will be on the hook to do everything else.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ALL OF THE THOUGHTFUL RESPONSES.  I need help with this as soon as possible.

User Profile number mismatch between two identical farms

I've created a secondary High Availability farm with, I believe, all of the same User Profile settings as the primary farm.

The primary shows:
Number of User Profiles 3,428

Secondary:
Number of User Profiles 3,363

Any recommendations on how to compare these results in a way that will establish why there is a discrepancy?

Thanks,

Scott

How to force Windows to authenticate a particular domain in the Domain\UserName format

I have a SharePoint setup in DomainA.

Its a single server farm setup on a Windows 2008 R2 server with ADDS and MSSQL 2008 R2 installed on it.

The SharePoint applications are set to use Windows Authentication.

The application seems to be working fine but it authenticates username with any domain prefix.

By domain prefix I mean the domain name part in DomainName\UserName format.

Is there a way to restrict this to one domain name ?

SQL server error

I was signing into a web site I have gone into many times on all of our home computers.

Today suddenly this error message appeared when attempting to sign in to the site.

It is happening on all of our home computers so it is not just one computer. I have called our internet provider and

they say I need to contact the destination web site technical support, who, of course, isn't answering their phone.

Below is the error message. Any idea how I should deal with this?

[InvalidOperationException: This operation can be performed only on a computer that is joined to a server farm

by users who have permissions in SQL Server to read from the configuration database.

To connect this server to the server farm, use the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard,

located on the Start menu in Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products.]

Remove old users from permissions lists?

Is there a way to delete previous staff members from site/folder/item permission lists who have been deleted from AD?

I know the usp timer job will mark user profile sites for deletion but i have lots of ex-staff in my farm access control lists and need to clean them up.

Thanks

stssync sharepoint Tasks cannot use uid parameter

When using stssync for synchronising tasks with outlook the uid parameter has no effect.

I expect that only tasks from that user are shown.

But if i use the uid parameter no task is shown. When omitting parameter all tasks are shown.

I tried different user ID's (my ID is 8 from _spPageContextInfo or /_catalogs/users/simple.aspx)

Can't add workflows through SPD because of a Soap Server Exception

$

Had a site owner contact me last week saying that she couldn't create a workflow through SPD.  Went to confirm and was told by SPD that workflows could not be added from the server.  Did a fiddler trace and got this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

-<soap:Envelope xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">

-<soap:Body>

-<soap:Fault><faultcode>soap:Server</faultcode><faultstring>Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown.</faultstring>

-<detail><errorstring xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/soap/">An error has occurred.</errorstring></detail></soap:Fault></soap:Body></soap:Envelope>

I'm pretty sure that this error happened after our System Admins ran the quarterly patches, but I'm afraid that it has been too long since those patches have been ran for me to just have them revert back to the snapshot of the server that made before the patches were installed.  Has anyone else seen this issue?

List alerts

Hi All

Thank you in advance for any advice given.

I know a bit of SharePoint 2010 features like creating workflows, lists etc. I've done a bit of research but I've not found any related to my issue. We have a form created via info path which we fill out daily adding a new item to the list. What I'd like is an alert or workflow that is set off if a form has not been filled in on that day.

Just to make things slightly more difficult it'd be an alert that goes off with a work week.

From what I've found doing it via a workflow may not be possible. Maybe I need to use an alert. Could anyone advise if this kind of functionality would be available in SharPoint or point me in the right direction for getting something set?

Thanks again for any help.

Cheers

Joel
