sharepoint 2010 404 error connection issue

I have setup a new sharepoint server on my ESXi server.  I have made our Unit's site collection. I can access the site via the local network (148.39.?.?) on a client machine, but I cannot access it from a client on a different network (144.144.?.?).  From the 144 network I can ping the sharepoint server and I can remotely log in to it.  I can also access the Central Administration Page from the 144 network as well. I have checked all bindings and they look good. I have even tried to extend the site and added new CNAME records, but still nothing.  I reconfigured the port to use 9999 just incase our firewall blocked that port. I am at a loss of what is wrong.  If anyone can help me troubleshoot this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
